April through August brings the strongest and most consistent afternoon breeze, in the 12-20 knot range on a normal day. This is when kiteboarders and windsurfers show up in numbers along the open stretches south of downtown.
September through February sees lighter, less predictable wind and cooler water. Fewer riders, but the clearest sunsets of the year and the start of gray whale season offshore.
A windbreaker for evenings even in summer, sunscreen that survives spray, and a rash guard if you are getting in the water midday. Water temperature runs cooler than it looks from the beach.
